Work Better. Live Smarter. Be Happier.

Photography commission for Courier Magazine's book Work Better. Live Smarter. Be Happier., photographing George and Cisco Gorrow, founders of The Slow, at their home in Canggu, Bali.

The assignment was to photograph them at home in the actual texture of their days. What The Slow communicates as a design philosophy, their home lives out quietly. The warmth is not curated. It is just how they are.

The Gorrows

George Gorrow and Cisco Tschurtschenthaler created The Slow, a modern island escape near one of Bali's best surf spots, offering accommodation, dining, art and fashion in one immersive experience. George co-founded Ksubi. Cisco founded the ceramics line Cisco & the Sun. Together they built a life in Canggu that looks, from the outside, like a very good idea someone had and then actually did. Courier's book profiles entrepreneurs around the world exploring how they live and work on their own terms. The Gorrows were exactly that story.

George Gorrow co-founded Ksubi, one of the most culturally significant denim labels to come out of Australia. Cisco Tschurtschenthaler was a model who grew up at Italian family dinner tables, where table settings were taken seriously and food was how love moved through a room. They met in Sydney, got engaged in Bali three weeks later on an underwater photoshoot, moved to New York for work they couldn't refuse, and then came back. When they returned to the plot of land they had planned to build their home on, Canggu had transformed around it. The dream piece of land was now in the middle of the island's fastest-growing neighbourhood. So they made a different decision. As George put it: the island home became the island stay.

The Slow opened in Canggu in 2016, twelve suites, a restaurant, a bar, a gallery showing over 100 works from their personal art collection, and a concept store stocking George's new menswear line Non-Type exclusively. One sound system runs throughout: a single channel curated by Reverberation Radio, the music collective formed by LA band Allah-Las. You don't choose the music at The Slow. You discover it. The design philosophy Cisco calls "warm minimalism",  natural textures against clean lines, rattan against concrete, linen against polished aggregate, it is interior design as a value system.

This is precisely the story Courier was built to tell, the quieter and more demanding story of people who looked at how they were living, decided it wasn't right, and then built something else from whatever was available, their taste, their friendships, their art, their land. Courier's book Work Better. Live Smarter. Be Happier. profiles twenty-five entrepreneurs around the world who work and live on their own terms. George and Cisco are the Bali chapter in the fullest sense.
